PROJECT

The intent of this project is interdisciplinary, multi-age study of Spring Creek, a stream that flows on the west edge of Spring Creek School.

We will use grant-funded professional development time to plan technology-enhanced lessons and learning experiences relating to environmental studies, stewardship, local history, cultural heritage and the arts.

Projects-within-the-project

SCSC Music Project - Sharon Rogers and Jane Krauss are planning QUEST projects with a songwriting and multimedia focus. Students will compose, play, and record a song about the creek. Students will teach the song to others and it will accompany a multimedia story of the Spring Creek Project.

Teacher Communications

Jane K., Laura, Kathy, Deanna, and Peter Thurston met on Tuesday Dec 11, to get this exciting project jump started. We discovered many ways to integrate The Creek Project into our science, reading and social studies programs. We are developing some examples of activites and easy ways to do standards based planning for fun, integrated, hands on activities involving your class, the creek, the school and the community. The activities may range from very simple, to more complex/ long-term/ cross-grade. Many ideas for meaningful, contextual technology uses abound, and we will encourage reading and writing activities as well. Our major hopes are that the staff, students and community will develop not only natural and environmental science knowledge, but also social studies/history knowledge, a sense of stewardship, a sense of community and a sense of fun.

Peter has a little sketch of the outdoor classroom area plan, which we'll share at the next staff meeting. In January we will share the planning ideas. The blackberries may be cut in January as well. We are working on a project kick-off assembly, and planting plan for spring. We would like to wrap up the year with a community involvement piece. If you're anxious to get started, you can take you kids out to take a look at Spring Creek, take a photo and brainstorm ways we could work together to make it better. Stay tuned for more ideas!

Willamette Resources Education Center. The contact is Polly McRae and the phone number is 683-6494.

From Peter Thurston November 13:

I sent Green School and City/County waste reduction grant forms to both principals. I have not checked to see if they got any farther for consideration. 3) I staked out a "lab" area along the creek and whacked some of the berry vines. Jane Carter will present the design to the powers that be when it is ready. I am thinking a couple semi-circles of stepping-stone sized rocks where kids can sit facing the creek is the lowest impact and minimum cost. 4) The Stream Team will provide native plants, mulch materials, and equipment to help with removal of more blackberries. These activities can unfold best in the winter and spring months.

There are more things going on. The above activities seem to hold promise and have the interest of several teachers. Just need to keep them perking along. Additionally, if the 1st grade "butterfly class" was engaged in the process to start a butterfly garden along the creek, this would be a great way to begin a five-year creek curriculum.

Details: Peter Thurston is the Project Coordinator.
Lane County funds the project from federal Secure Rural Schools funding, known as Title III. Lane County OSU Extension Service is the contracting agency and the Master Gardener program has sponsored it. Eugene Stream Team has supported cleanup activities in the cheek and will provide support and plants for projects. Santa Clara Community Organization is interested in developing the Spring Creek Neighbors Natural Gardens into the community development process. You know about Awbrey Park school's interest in doing something to integrate activiities, and there are other agencies available to provide presentations along the way. The North American Butterfly Association is providing milkweed and butterfly eggs, caterpillars or chrysalysis.

Neighbors:  Peter made contact with residents who live at the Spring Creek headwaters.  Steve and Kay Root live at 3248 Marvin Dr., on a cul-de-sac, about a 10 minute walk from the school.  They have been there for 40 years and can tell stories about changes in the creek.  There is water in the spring pool behind there house right now.

To make arrangements for a visit, contact Kay most anytime at: 689-2678 (home) or 689-2127 (work).  She is at home on

Wednesdays and Thursdays to show classes around.  Please feel free to contact her directly.
